It is against the Minnesota law (M.S. 89.551 Sec.2 Subd.3b) to bring unapproved firewood into any state park, state forest, or day-use area. Firewood can harbor many different kinds of invasive pests that are harmful to Minnesota trees. Firewood restrictions are needed to help prevent the introduction or spread of damaging forest pests including the emerald ash borer, gypsy moth, sirex wood wasp, Asian long-horned beetle, as well as pathogens that cause Dutch elm disease, sudden oak death, and oak wilt.

The spread of these and other pests has been closely associated with the movement of firewood. Surveys indicate that approximately 50 percent of overnight visitors typically bring firewood to Minnesota state parks and state forest campgrounds annually, putting state lands at high risk for pest infestations.
